Changing printer parameters in Windows

When adjusting printer parameters there might be misunderstandings as Windows utilizes various entry points and default values. This article describes the correct proceedings.

Printer parameters can be stored as global parameters and as user related parameters.
With this the user has the option to set his own defaults in the printer settings.

Depending on the server setting, the admin is able to set all parameters or that additional rights have to be requested. This is the case when the button „Change Properties“ in the tab „General“ is displayed. Without these rights, Ports- or Advanced-settings cannot be adjusted:

(1) Due to this, you have to claim the rights first:

Now this button disappears and you can make changes to the settings:

(2) To change printer parameters, you must make changes under „Advanced“!

If you make changes under General/Preferences, they only apply for the currently logged in user!
